Lab Research Featured in ANFF NEXT: Little Brains to Help Our Kids

We are proud to share that our groundbreaking research has been highlighted in the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) NEXT report, featured in the ANFF Casebook 2024. The report embodies ANFF’s forward-thinking vision, focusing on expanding capabilities and supporting Australia’s advanced manufacturing sector.

The article, titled Little Brains to Help Our Kids, highlights Dr. Ann-Na Cho’s pioneering Human Brain Microphysiological System (huBMS), a cutting-edge approach to creating realistic brain organoids using advanced microfluidic technology. This system is designed to unlock the secrets of childhood dementia, a devastating condition affecting over 100 Australian children annually, many of whom tragically lose their lives before age 18.

In collaboration with ANFF-NSW's Research and Prototype Foundry, Dr. Cho's team worked closely with engineers Nelson Briones and Ethel Ilagan to develop the microfluidic device, ensuring optimal nutrient exchange for the organoids. This collaboration is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary partnerships and cutting-edge technology in advancing healthcare.

We are excited about the impact this research will have on public health and grateful to ANFF for supporting our efforts to push the boundaries of biomedical engineering.
